So far, everyone's been fixated on this happening at all. I personally struggle to empathize with the strength of the reactions to this, especially when this was telegraphed in the previous installment.

That said, I think everyone's missing something crucial: this is happening to Hanabi because she's trying to be a better person. The blackmail material at hand, as far as either her or Kirigaya are concerned, doesn't have anything to do with her, but with some other third party she's spent most of this manga feeling slighted by. If she didn't care about Souma, and didn't care about wanting to not be an asshole anymore, she wouldn't lose anything by doing nothing.

It's not warped at all. If Hanabi didn't care about Souma, and about protecting Souma, Kirigaya would have no leverage to use against her at this point. Kirigaya would threaten her with the video that hardly involves her, Hanabi would be like "do it, then", and Kirigaya would be like "wait what".

That's not meant to be an indictment of anything. If anything, I'm pointing out the extent of Hanabi's contrition and the direness of the circumstances, that she's in this position because she's trying to be a better person. I think it's more valuable to talk about how things would change if some character detail was different, than if a certain test for her character didn't exist.

But then, this is all us talking like this isn't on some level a way to redeem her by way of creating a bigger evil that disproportionately victimizes her.

I feel as though people in anime and manga fall for blackmail too easily. Appeasing a blackmailer once theoretically means appeasing that blackmailer for the rest of your life.
