It's sand made of iron particulate. Iron is found in rocks. Sand is rocks, ground down over a long period of time by erosion. You do the math lol. There's also iron bacteria in water some places that feed on the iron sand, and even said bacteria can be used to make iron (shoutouts to John Plant).

There's plenty of places where you can pull out iron sand from regular sand with a strong magnet. Including Japan, which has a long history of using the stuff. Them having very little in iron deposits and using iron sand to make their weapons is most of the reason they made katanas and the like the way they are instead of the thicker European-style weaponry. Well, both because of all their iron being scarce iron sand, as well as the resulting lack of metal armor, but I digress.

Check out some videos on the old fashioned katana creation process, they're neat. Making iron billets by heating what you have, and drizzling iron mud (iron sand in water) on it, then firing it, etc.

IMO since sand is technically something ground until the size of sand (i.e. it’s also a size label), it wouldn’t be sand if it’s ground any further (to dust) or not ground down enough (as gravel). Hence why we have iron sand (sand-sized iron ore). Reminder: regular sand is mostly silicon and rock, with bits of shell and/or bone)
