As someone already said their "Doctor" is slightly more useful than your grandmother(Which is completely worthless when compared to modern day doctors) and his "friends" are people he barely knows and mostly cooks food for them. Seriously, Shuri is mostly locked up in kitchen because he is one guy forced to feed small army on his own(Which also seems to include washing dishes, which is just cruel from my pov) and the extremely small time between his work and bed he spends to explain modern science to bunch of bozos. Yes, they are worried because he is their only source of good food and modern knowledge no one has and yes, some of mercernary members do respect him, but they are nothing close to what we would describe as "friend" but more of a coworker or comrade in arms rather than friends.
