It also doesn't match the tone or pacing at all for where we are in the story (literally - we're at, like, the beginning still).

I can admit I was a touch like "aww c'mon man", but I fully get it. Plus he was there with his mom; can't just up and ditch family/his one ride home to hang out with someone he's barely reconnected with and has very confused feelings over to boot.
Anyone seriously upset that he didn't go with her, is wildin'.
