Something I really like about this kid is that he isn't just pity bait, and can be a fairly petty person. If someone gives him an inch of kindness, he'll take a mile and lord it over them. It makes sense, he's been deprived all his life, so of course, he'll be intoxicated by any kind of reprieve.

Don't get the overreaction to "dense" MC. Especially the deal with the cat. A black cat isn't evident or anything. Rather, the fact that Takamine somehow expected Sirota to have a realization based on that alone speaks more of her (obsession) than it does of him. Sirota wasn't out of line here...
