Nasa has the right idea. If something you need to do is hard, you don't give up. He accepts that this is something he needs to practice at and commits himself to it.
Ironically, wanting to die might lead this guy to live a more fulfilling life. He's reaching out and pursuing a relationship (with alternate motivations for sure) because he has no fear of death (the opposite, in fact). I'm hoping he can realize that life doesn't have to suck; it can be great...
