This didn't make sense to me last time I read it like half a decade ago, it just made me deeply uncomfortable. But I think now that I'm a little older and have experienced a couple more things, it makes a lot of sense.

I don't know about you, but her body language and face in this chapter suggests to me she's not really recognizing her own emotions in this scene. For someone supposedly not feeling anything, her face sure looks like the picture of emotional distraught to me.
