Miku really was mature about those kisses with Yukiya. It's not just about how good you feel, it's about if you're someone you'd love to kiss! It's really interesting that kissing brought them closer, but they still aren't dating. Now kisses seem to be on the table as teasing. They really normalized kissing in their relationship.

I don't know if Kakeru and Shirayuri can try the Pocky game the same way though. Their relationship is more physical, and would probably lead to something more romantic.

I'm not sure what the play is here. Did he think the kissing wasn't serious? Why are they pretending it didn't mean anything? So confused with what the authors idea is.
Because if they admit it is real they are afraid everything will change. The teasing allows them to slowly change their relationship.

At the beginning of the series it was said that the game is what ketp them together when they drifted apart. They drifted apart because they couldn't deal with the emotions they had for each other. They still can't really face them but they are working toward it.

But I thought the whole point of the game was to get the other to see them as a potential love interest and confess? They've pretty well hit that point now where neither can deny the other has feelings for them

If you read chapter 1 and chapter 18 again, it becomes pretty clear that the goal of the game isn't to gauge the other's feelings as much as it is a vehicle to improve their own confidence. Basically, they feel that dating now would only stagnate that personal growth and ultimately undermine the longevity of their relationship. Is this rational? Not really, but it's consistent enough.

As a side note, I wonder if it will ever be acknowledged that this is resembles a codependent relationship, by some characteristics. Particularly for Yukiya, who has no friends other than Miku. It's kind of a difficult subject matter for a romcom, so I doubt it.

No the game is there to protect them incase their real feelings come out. All they have to do is ask did that fluster you and they can play it off as the game and not a real conteesi.
