@mage_goo: Gladiators also wore partial plating. Its to cover at least some spots with plating, so that it can be used to thrust away attacks, redirect attacks to at least hit the plating, if they can't be evaded anymore, and do other dirty tricks, I'd imagine (Diving right into an attack to counterattack, smacking you opponents face with it, aso....) But yeah...preserving mobility should be the upper most priority when using partial plating and that setup with the huge ass helmet looks quite unbalanced. It didn't only strike you as weird.
