at first I thought: oh, he didn't deny being her boyfriend
then I checked the raw, and what her mother said was ボーイフレンド instead of 彼氏
I wonder if the word here leans more towards 'male friend' or 'lover/boyfriend'
Probably to make it sounds more playful, giving the nuance she’s just teasing them rather than taking it seriously.

But there will be people who will quickly assume it’s romantic isn’t it?
Hopefully the classmates simply think that she's being nice and honest and reflect on their behaviors. However, I have a feeling that they won't and probably start harassing the mc even more, especially if she goes into further details (like being in his house before), until the culture festival actually begins and he could possibly show off his cooking skills and amaze his foolish classmates.

ain't it just a trendy way of using Engrish in modern Japanese sentences?

Too many manga/novels/anime did this to refer ボーイフレンド as "boyfriend(lover)". Not just "kareshi 彼氏”
