There are few things more depressing in literature than an author with zero talent for it trying to write a comedy series. It will become nothing but a contrived mess full of old cliches not even executed properly. Based on all the manga I've read, the Japanese absolutely love the destitute hero trope, and thus it's commonplace for the main character to rack up debt through strange mishaps. But the author here couldn't make even that work. The MC is supposedly working as a janitor at the magic academy. The damage he caused was a hole in the ground. As a janitor it would be up to him to fix it. Not really a huge problem with his magic. But instead he somehow owns the academy 30 million definitely-not-yens. For a stupid hole in empty ground. The next thing he does is take a pair of magic boots out of his storage, so long forgotten he doesn't remember how to maintain them, which means he never uses them. He could probably sell them for more than that 30 million this-can't-be-yens.
I have always hated the destitute hero trope, but at least it could be used properly.
