She fully believes that the default response to that news is to execute her and everyone around her for blasphemy against the true saint. Under normal circumstance that’s even true and she’s underestimating just how well liked she is.

I suggest reading the novel. It's short enough that any summary wouldn't do it justice.
The story starts pretty light ( feels like a story with no lore) , but becomes kind off dark. Every single thing is explained, including Why Elrise acts like she does.
Although the manga nailed the first part of the story where it's light/funny, I don't think it can properly do the more dark/heavy part.
For example Eterna believing herself a witch starts with a doubt which escalates pretty fast out of control.
Maybe I'm calling it too soon, but so far, it doesn't look as impactful. ( combination of art + skipped parts + long release between chapters)

Wow the discussion thread was full of spoiler huh... Please don't read them if you still want to enjoy this story to its full potential. I went in this story blind and it was a wonderful experience.
As someone who finished the WN, I would say that this story was really well-written, without leaving any major plot holes, or unanswered questions. And I strongly suggest anyone who interest in the story to read the WN/LN if you don't want to wait, also because the manga left out many minor interesting details as well. There's one complete fan translation of the story, and J-novel also on their way to publish the first volume in June.

in the novel eterna is terrified since she thinks she's the witch and that the strongest saint in history wants to kill her (there is also a lot more about how stronger Elize is than the other saints, knights, and witches)
so when Elize says "the witch is hidden in the school" Eterna goes pale because it confirms for her the absolute unite that Elize is will kill her
however when Elize sees her pale she thinks Eterna is scared of the witch and says (to calm her down) something like "don't worry, im powerful enough to destroy her as soon as I find her" and then Eterna just runs away almost crying in fear, bc ofc she will Elize is terrifying for her
go and read the novels they are soo goood, they are only 4 and half of the last one is just random stories post credits, fully recomended, they are skipping so much here i wanna cry :'(
