I'm guessing the point is that feelings of loss and grief and such are multiplied by how much you actually lose.
Let's say that we have two guys who are completely identical.
One of them has a mother and father.
And a lovely wife. With 3 children. He also has siblings that have their own children so they have a big family.

Versus a guy who only has a scornful father.
Then they lose everything to some random disaster. Who will be feeling the worst, between the two?
By letting the King experience such a grand life for 20 years, the feeling of horror and dread and despair will be amplied by a tonne when the ultimate realization kicks in that everything was fake, created by Raoul. Furthermore implying to the King that even if he were to win against Raoul again, somehow, ... what if it was all an illusion again? Does he spend the next 20 years doing the same again, trying to rebuild his kingdom and his family, while never letting go of that nagging feeling that maybe it's Raoul's illusions at work again?

... just a thought, anyway.
