For anybody reading this who hasn't also read Koe no Katachi/A Silent Voice (or knows the context for this from anywhere else),
月 - "moon," pronounced "tsuki"
好き - "like," pronounced "suki."
They sound pretty similar if you aren't being absolutely clear. That's what the last page is about (´ー`)b

@Bainhardt, I've never read Koe no Katachi, but I do read Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun ? That's where I learned that first.

@Bainhardt I don't know Japanese, but isn't this based off of the story that Natsume Soseki said that saying "The moon is beautiful" is a more appropriate way for Japanese way to say "I love you", since he believed it went against the culture to be so explicit about one's feelings? I guess it's possible that he was trying to make a pun, and the story was possibly apocryphal anyway.

I'm at a crossroads; on one hand, i like Yabe enough that i don't want him to get into any sort of trouble. On the other....i like Okazaki so much I'm literally cheering "Get it, GET IT!" every time she makes a move on him. the conflict be real.

Internal conflict aside though.... Okazaki get it, get yer man.

@spurgleburgle Well whether or not it's a true story, that explanation definitely sounds like the reason such a thing would be part of Japanese literary culture.
It's very interesting to find through this comment section alone that it's appeared in at least 3 different manga. Thanks for the info!
Of the three instances I'm now aware of, I think Gal Gohan is the one where, contextually speaking, that matter of "appropriateness" would be most fitting, given the relationship between Yabe and Okazaki.

@kuma

Agreed.
Hope author know Yabe/Miku interactions are the main interest of this manga, not a random harem we can see in every rom-com .

@bainhardt

This "the moon is beautiful" was also in the manga about the guy tutoring 5 identical twin sisters. One of the sisters said "The moon looks beautiful tonight" and after he looked stunned for a moment, told her that she needed to study literature more. One can only assume it's because he (being a very smart guy) knew that saying something like that was akin to an old-timey confession of love.

The moon is beautiful is a subtle and romantic way of Japanese to tell someone that they love he/she. I remember there's a anime with that exact same title. What a good romance anime imo

I miss those days where Gal Gohan was just the teacher and the gyaru without love triangle/quadrangle/quintangle/whatever

Yabe, just tell her she has to wait till she graduates, and everything will be ok, you wont go to jail for telling her to wait.
