Now this is what GATE excels at, showing that while having the advantage, it's not one sided, and showing their allies who have learned to trust, work with, and adapt. Seeing the camaraderie between the locals and the JSDF, and the old king loving every minute of it. Yes, the cute girls/boys and beautiful women/men are very much appreciated, but I live for that modern vs fantasy element of this series.

Flame thrower...that illegal
Ironically no, they still aren’t illegal, just now they’re not used since they’re usually deemed inefficient to use compared to regular small arms
Flamethrower is prohibited under Protocal III of the Geneva Convention, so they are illegal, but there's a caviat.
The thing about the Protocol III is it only forbids the use of incendiary weapons on civilian targets, not military ones. So you can still use flamethrower on military targets like bunkers, trenches, caves, etc.

I had read that in the Second World War the flamethrower position was fraught. It's a cruel and horrifying weapon, and so if the operator is captured they would be given particular attention by the captors.

Got it. The rest of small arms are legal against civilian targets.

Duran just waltzing over the battlefield with his cane, lmao, what a badass
He had been badly betrayed by the Empire. His army was set up to be destroyed at Alnus. He has every reason to pace out his ownership of the battlefield.

It must feel good.

That armored column, all those trucks and personnel carriers. Choppers, jets.
Is there a pipeline that just goes through the Gate, because that's a lot of fuel burning. I understand that it's important to capitalize on one of the key advantages of the JSDF: Speed and mobility, so they "don't spare the horses" when they need to be somewhere, but . . . damn.

Doesn't Japan depend on imported fuel? I would think that the competing powers on Earth would use that as leverage for some concessions on access to the Special Region.

EDIT: OK, there's mention later of U.S. supplying ammunition, so there is at least some logistical support from other countries. We have a long-standing relationship with Japan, and so might be best positioned to do this. That Gate is quite a bottleneck, though. I imagine it's not good to invade a continent from a single beach.
