Whenever I reread, this scene just gets to me. It's a subject very personal to Tatsumi, and just like Hiraizumi said he can't really say he would have done anything different himself. You don't want to ever stop playing, but stopping could prolong your career, but then you fall behind and tank your career anyway. It's a painful conundrum.
