The dad had the right idea of it. Get rid of that mobile shit and let him play some real games.
Games are games, if playing it brings you pleasure, then that's fine. Not all mobile games are microtransaction-laden Skinner boxes where you have to spend money to have fun and nowadays there are quite a few PC games that are microtransaction-laden Skinner boxes where you have to spend money to have fun as well, so there's not as big a difference as you think there is. (Including some AAA titles.)
My mother played a ton of mobile games on her tablet, mostly things like hidden object, match-3 and other more "simple" games. She had trouble with them at times and would ask me to help her out if she got stuck on a level. She would have had no chance in hell of playing a MMO or a FPS or anything you're thinking of as a "real game." Despite that she spent more time playing her games every week than I did my own.
Incidentally one of her favorite games was the
Xenosaga series on PS2, because she watched me play them and loved the story as much as I did. She also enjoyed
Final Fantasy X for the story as well, again from watching me play. She just couldn't manage to play games like that herself.
