I don't think it's really viewed as a fetish normally, most of the time it's more comfort then anything sexual, similar to a massage i'd say. Not saying that some don't feel sexual gratification from it, massages can become sexual depending on context and what both parties are doing, but inherently not many see it as a fetish, i think. @Shootyagoo cleaning ears is some basic human hygiene - like wipe your ass, clean your nose etc, its when you remove your body products. so its kinda on the same lvl as snot, shit etc. so to do it by someone else not even gross - its unhygienic. and, by the way, its dangerous to someone else to clean you ears - bcs they dont feel the depth of you ear canal and could easily hurt your eardrum. when you do it - you feel when it hurts.
and you compare to a massage - not even close. such things like massage - first - you cant do it yoursel (like REAL massage, not some "rub my leg myself"), and it dont involve cleaning your body products, it has different meaning.
anyway - what i meant - i only see this kind of shit in japaneese culture. i maybe wrong and somewhere else its normal too - but for my country - its gross. its liturally like asking to wipe your ass kind of stuff.

@Jmann It's far east asia culture people are more collective less individualistic by tradition. That's why they support strong ruler centralized and used to have limited rights until Western culture arrive and send the cross,jean, individualism by philosophy thanks to greeks. Public companies really belong to the people and they won't get as much degradation. And food sharing everyone share their dishes so deal with it. If you travel in china or japan and not doing it it's bad for business.

@Kamelpov A belief in reincarnation better supports the idea of working to build a better future for the next generations because in a way you are helping yourself out and every family member and friend you've had in every life. Lol the whole danger thing is western bullshit. If anything it is riskier to do it yourself by pushing the crap deeper into the ear canal. Also most asians have flaky wax, mostly skin flakes vs that wet goop westerners get. So you need to see where that pesky flake is that keeps wiggling about in your ear!

As for cleaning if you belive doctors you shouldnt clean your ears, ever. Seen much nasty crap here in then states when it comes to ears.

And no, most japanese my family included all share cleaning duties, we do not go to a shop for it. Though I have to say it should be a service as most people end up empacting it deeper in the ear or use bullshit things like ear candles.
As for culture I guess it is that whole skinship thing. Massages, back scratches, etc are all those relaxation comfort things others can provide. Maybe it is some conspiracy to train kids to get married as those are those things you do not get being single.

And yes in media it is a sexual or realationship trope, and it only is recognizable as such by the younger generations. Show something like this to my parents or grandparents and they wouldnt get it.
