Why are they shocked? Is there a magically rule that prevents her from returning if she continues to live in her human form?

I . . .
I don't think anyone would love a rat / mouse / field mouse or rodent as a matter of fact
Lots of weird people in the world, and our Cinderella here is also a bit damaged by her surroundings.
And like they always tell us, its whats one the inside that counts.

That's quite the statement, when you can literally walk in any pet shop and buy one as a pet.

People that have pet rats are "weird" and "damaged"? Judgemental much?

True love as they said here, usually isnt very platonic.
Having romantic thoughts about a rodent isnt very normal.

That said, this rodent is cognitively human.

When a mother sees their child for the first time and feels overwhelming love for them. Or when an older sibling sees their newborn younger sibling and feels a strong doting love for them. Both scenarios could be considered love at first sight.

No one ever said love at first sight had to only be romantic. Implied? Sure. Only romantic? Nah.

...I do love a good yuri, though. I just hope the age gap isn't that big. Elodie could be, like, 10 and Sera 14 for all we know so it could potentially work out. But even if it doesn't work out that's fine. Just seeing them care for each other and be cute is pleasant as is. ^-^

The gap is probably in the other direction. The mouse has an extra 10+ years, as seen in chapter 1.
