Because what if you fail? At an unrelated thing for an unrelated reason. Should you undermine your whole life because you've failed at one thing that has nothing to do with anything else?

I see the entire 'I'll confess if I win' thing as an excuse for being a coward. They use some kind of unrelated struggle as a way to measure their worth and/or boost their confidence if they don't have the courage to confess to someone they like outright. It's especially retarded when it's glaringly obvious that both parties are head over heels for each other. So stupid.

I said it before in an earlier chapter but neither of them are going to like each other less if they don't win at whatever they're doing. It would actually have more meaning as a life lesson by losing, as it would show them that even one's best effort doesn't guarantee victory.

With that in mind, I would not be surprised if Nagatoro ends up losing her final match as well.

God, I felt the same way when they were at a festival back in ch 106 and playing the "love fortune stone" game where your romance will be affected whether you can walk over and touch the rock with your eyes closed. When he got momentarily lost, he had a similar breakdown this chapter. It wasn't even played for laughs or anything, he literally imagined a whole future he never got together with Nagatoro and she was already dating someone else.
