It looks like the fat ugly bastard was vanessa pawn, she made so that the previous apostle, a actual good person, got killed in a mission, probably the small cross was a lucky charm that did the exact inverse.
Then he thought he would get the wife power, but Vanessa moved things so it would go to her, leaving him under.
I presume the richness he showed was insurance money or the wife actually used the church funds and donation to help people.
The pope is apiece of shit, but from hs dialogue...it seems like he doesn't know he is worshiping a parasite and not the real moon?

-Sacrificed some potential of Son of The Moon
-Severely weakened Cheryl to revive Buck
-A sloppy appointment of a new cheshire moon
-Some instability, mostly recovered within the day.
