Lovrecraftian lore it seems. When you dream, you are projecting yourself into another plane. He made a map of the Dreamlands and all. Our protagonist seems to have made a contract with some form of Outer God that has limited power over this world and therefore using him as intermediary he can pass on his knowledge.
The Charles boy seems to have been thrown into the dreamlands, but since Wilde got a book from the MC he may have inadvertently learned how to interact with that plane.
