And if he isn't OP, wouldn't this make this a generic story where the MC isn't OP??? Being OP has nothing to do with the story being generic...

In fact, even if he becomes OP, the story itself shouldn't really change other than him not having danger... but this wasn't a battle story anyways...

So being OP allows this to avoid being a generic battle series and would give him a good layer of protection.

This is slice of life and should stay that way.
