He did ultimately leave his wife to get remarried and let her daughter go with the mom. Whatever his reasons, he broke the family apart, but at least he can leave knowing his ex-wife and daughter have a better environment and family situation.

Yeah iirc the mom had enough with the Dad He was an unsuccessful Actor who kept making excuses for his struggles in Acting (Chapter 3 pg12) which eventually drove him into alcoholism, gambling, smoking, and becoming a Lazy Bum (Chapter 1 pg35)

My point is kind of that...If the father isn't involved, the author can simply not have the father. But it's a bit weird to introduce him saying goodbye.
