I realize that moto plays with the theme that “Daddy” not even needing to try to do anything different, because he is already happy where he is, so he’s quiet.

While the prevailing theme in America is “make life what you want it”, the endless pursuit is tiring. This is why, ironically, the 1930s is my favorite decade of the 20th century here. Sometimes I wonder if we’ll have a repeat that 100 years later…

So is the little boy who teases Chi supposed to be the son of that other couple from the main manga who they are friends with?

I’ve kept saying the same thing and it’s true. This man can’t say he love his wife to save his child.

I like this. Well,
I actually love this!

We're now waaaay past all "Just remake the original chapter with them as adults" phase, so that means these nice moments instead of weird manchild teasing stories.

With that, we (I) can actually rationalize that Dad Nishikata doesn't say those mushy-mushy things nor is the huggy-kissy type, so that means that when he does express such feelings? Damn, how they matter to Mom Nishikata.

Do most people not realise that this chapter shows Nishikata's slight shift towards being more straightforward?

Sure he's still pretty indirect, which is part of his character and less weird than people from the West often think, but he does consciously recognize when he should just be straightforward as an adult based on the last panel, in contrast to him only being straightforward instinctively during emotionally-charged situations.

Lots of people can't read between the lines for the end page of him going to say it, or that he was literally about to multiple times but kept getting cut off.
