Seriously sounds like the dude needs to go out and test it on some humans before taking it himself. He clearly is able to produce enough quantities to test on mice, so would be able to take some time testing on various ppl, with or without consent (though I imagine consent would be very easy to get, considering his target demographic). If nothing else he would need to figure out dosage.
But before all that, sounds like he needs to get a night of sleep or five or 20. Since he hasn't slept in nearly 100 years apparently.

also, 500 years sounds like it's very likely his clock hit counterstop, overflowed, and has gone a couple cycles.
