Y'all keep talking about peaceful coexistence. That shit sounds good but what do you do when somebody doesn't want peace?

Talk it out? They don't want to talk.
Hug it out? They don't want to hug.
Concede some shit? They don't want your concessions.
Submit or die.

What are you going to do in those situations? Cry? Beg your enemy to see things your way? Good luck with that. While the princess is being idealistic, not that anything is wrong with idealism that has conviction behind it, her people are dying and more will die because of her ineptitude. Sucks for them.

You guys are overthinking it. This is just typical shonenshit authors prolonging the fight ala Dragonball.

Hindsight is 20-20. She might have overestimated his value as a hostage and didn't think he has some sort of trump card.
However, if those monsters were already in the city, then it would actually be worse if he was killed as he would then be unable to command them to back off. In battles of the past irl, killing off the captain may result in the collapse of the formation, but there's no guarantee of a rout - the worst that could happen is if the entire enemy formation goes into a melee out of revenge or desparation, causing unnecessary casualties.

If they fight, you fight back of course. Hope to reach a stalemate or cripple their ability to wage war, but don't give them nor your own side too many reasons to start another. Having as many pieces in your hand for peace talks as possible would make negotiations smoother. Killing no-name grunts would be expected, but notables have more value being alive.

I don't know what the demon lord's plan B is, but I don't think sparing the life of a notable is a bad decision.

after quickly going over the chapter again, i am of the opinion that the sequence at the end is just a bit silly. it's mainly that the enemy is left unrestrained, which has little to do with the decision that he should be left alive.
like, yea, killing him would do the trick, but they just chatted there while he's just there.

Way to go, lady. This is entirely your fault. Not only did you not kill him, you just left him sitting there unrestrained. Though, I suppose Hiro is also partly to blame for saying anything before just killing him when he was on the ground.

Hiiro: "i must kill him, he's an enemy thats killed many of your people, is still a continuous threat, tried his best to kill me, and tried to kill you"
DL: "Well, yes, but actually no"
Peace is all fine and dandy but you got to killl and get rid of the people who irrationally dont want peace (ie that guy, the king). Like, normal citizens dont feel the effects (nor will care anyway) when these people die - they feel the affects of those ruling them imposing their will. Like the king continuing a war due to his own personal grudge when the other team is fully committed to peace, or a beast king who just wants to be the strongest (actually dont know his intentions but thats worse i guess?)

Let me guess: Even after this they won't kill the cat warrior. I wonder how long that demon girl can keep herself in power. Subjects loyal to her should be disappearing and those opposing her multiplying.
