I feel like the premise would be way more interesting if the kid didn't die. ( coma, having to live in some special care facility far away etc.)

Like the way it is now it will just be a revenge fix with no real emotional complexity. right?
If the kid survived there is a whole potential for "having to choose between revenge and having a life with your kid". Or the threat of exposure having actualy meaning outside of "don't get exposed before you get revenge on them all"

In my school there were kids from senior classes who sniffed glue, there were fights around the corner, and hiding other people's stuff was harmless fun. It's just ridiculous if you can stand up for someone else while being so pathetic that you fall from the gaze and leap to your death just when they tell you to.
It's a very weak setup (including an appearance-change operation) to quickly vindicate what the author is about to narrate.
