Since we are pulling beings from more than one potential earth, this works out really well.

LoTR was written before and after WWII, but published in 1954 (10 years-ish after Iyo-san's isekai).

"The Hobbit" was published in 1937, but really hit popularity after 1960, along with (and, in part, due to) "The Lord of the Rings."
(In fact, they were so popular that people would tag subway cars in NYC, Chicago, and around the world with the words "Frodo Lives." Otaku will never be held down!)

So, while this Japanese soldier may not read English, the entire series was available in Japanese by 1955-ish... and this no-nonsense soldier would have enough time to overcome some of his... less savory traits (IJA soldiers in 1930-45 were.... really, really terrible; ask Korea, some time).

Anyway.

This all seems to track really well!
(Aside from the lack of snow on a mountain in winter; WTF)
