I don't think that's all of it, but certainly would make sense as another part of the lore. And not just a shrine in form only, but a real serious shrine that is regularly maintained/cared for/prayed to/has offerings. Neglected shrines that are just there as decoration probably wouldn't do it. This guy has a good heart and is very serious about keeping the memory of those past with him, which may affect having the spirits actually be able to stay with him too.
