People are being conditioned to think thus, from a chorus of “Ewww!”

“Ewww!” is no more a valid argument in this case than it was in the case of homosexuality. But it persuades people none-the-less.

This particular chorus was begun by older women, not wanting to compete with the physical attributes of younger women. Then it was joined by younger men, not wanting to compete with the material resources of older men.

What gave the chorus volume was older women gaining more material resources.

But “Ewww!” still isn't a proper argument.

It was shown in the very first chapter that he is quite averse to confrontations. Also, relationships between superior and subordinate are frowned upon, for good reasons, so he wants to avoid that without turning her down in a way that would hurt their work situation. He really does need her help in telling people off.

When he said he prefers proactive people I fully expected her to grab his necktie and pull him down to kissing level. But then that would have made this manga very short...
