To be fair, she dotes on Rosemary, but never harshly condemn Serena. At most, she just asks her to be nicer to her sister.

And her reaction when thinking about Serena doesn't imply she hates her own daughter.
More like she is despaired from not knowing what to do anymore. The story said she's not the type to go to social gatherings, so she probably doesn't have many friends to consult either.
She knew serena was a special case of a child, but instead of being with her she plays favorite instantly when rosemary came. And blatantly sideline serena.
And it was implied she's regretting having serena from her inner monologue. She's just a bad mother, and thinking she's the victim by having a child like serena.

A crucial fact I think people are forgetting is that, even Serena had preferred to be alone. Clearly the mother is very empathetic and can clearly tell something is wrong with Serena especially with the lack of smiles and fake smiles. The mother is not raising Serena because, Serena was raised in the slums. She remembers everything from her past life and having relations is alien to her. The mother is an idiot but she can try to repair this relationship, but can she with how Serena thinks and acts? The time for a mother/daughter talk is now because she is older, but might not be able to because she can feel the "abyss."

What a sh!tty mother ! She neglected her own child and expect MFC would happy with that ? And she didn't even try to educate the adopted one what "Noblesse Oblige" mean. Fake smile is the nobles' most basic skill, wonder if she's just dumb or so naïve ? And as family head, the father did nothing too. This family is so screwed up on many level @@

For all of those trying to defend the mother. If you look at this from another point of view, the way Serena acts and show herself to others could be very well taken as signs of autism, would you still be defending the mother knowing that?

Jesus Christ her mom is just awful & how can you believe all those things when all you do is keep making the household worse without even consulting your husband. Even if Prince Evan puts Rosemary in her place, she's just going to accuse Serena of brainwashing or something stupid. I can't wait to see what she says but good on Prince Evan for doing that in front of her peers. Thanks for the chapter.
To accuse Serena of brainwashing means she also looks down on the Prince.

I dunno, mother. Maybe if you try to get close and treat your first daughter better, she might show a real smile.

Mother's complaints ring kind of hollow, considering she doesn't really have a relationship with her own daughter. Like, to the point where MC's father, who is barely present due to his work, has a deeper, more trusting relationship than she does. MC is a stranger in her own house, what's there to smile about?
She didn't try to truly connect with her daughter, gave up, and moved on to a shiny new toy. And now she is looking for justifications to her failures as a parent. "It's not MY fault, it's the kid who is weird!"

Honestly, I'm starting to feel a bit bad for the mother in a way. How she alienated her daughter isn't good but... it must be scary or at least saddening to feel that your child has never smiled and shows some... sort of psychotic behaviors.

On the other hand... Rosemary just continues to dig her own grave despite being advised otherwise time and time again. She really needs to learn to stop being so full of herself because she's very quickly gaining villainess status without anything to back it up
I can understand the first bit about feeling alienated, but the woman also never really tried to get along with her - she basically picked up a new daughter as a replacement instead of trying to understand her kid.

Serena avoids her.
The opening of this chapter shows it. When her mother tried to talk with her, Serena's thought is "which reaction is the best answer". She is facing it as a problem, not as interaction.
This could have been what is happening all these years. Back when the dog break into their garden, Serena is also just having tea with her mom like it's an obligation to "act normal".

Rosemary answers back, so it would seem like a conversation is going.

Serena in the other hand, there's nothing her mother can think about. She is too self-sufficient and not needing anyone. When talked to, she gives that "Is that all? I'm busy" vibe. The signals like how she would push you for being too close, and then avoids you more the next time.

Evan seems to be the only one who managed to do it, because he can use their agreement as excuse for her to not run away. Even with that, she still won't open up to have less serious talk with him on her own initiative. And he knew her true colour enough for her to not bother putting a mask anymore because she already knew it doesn't matter. Their relationship is purely business and as long as both side hold their end of the deal then no complaints.
Tigur's attempts also don't get any good response.

Is the mother brainwashed or natural idiot? Open your eyes, your daughter is suffering! :qq:
Natural.
And I don't think Serena is suffering. Usually she is just annoyed at the stupidity of people around her.
Other time, she is only trying to understand new feelings she never had chance to understand in her past life. But she is not feeling suffering from being unloved because she is dragging on her past life. She never see her family in this life as family, only strangers in place she is infiltrating to.

For all of those trying to defend the mother. If you look at this from another point of view, the way Serena acts and show herself to others could be very well taken as signs of autism, would you still be defending the mother knowing that?
Would. It's not like a trial where one side must take all the blame while the other is faultless.
The setting is not modern world where you have all kind of information about mental health awareness, or even understanding of it.
They usually learn from how they were raised by their own family, sharing with friends (which she doesn't have), and maybe hiring tutors (who gave up trying to teach Rosemary).

Both daughters (even the one without reincarnation) are too stubborn to change their way.
Serena who tries to keep minimum contact with anyone.
Rosemary who is living in a story she created in her head.

the prince is creepy asl who tf just randomly smells someone’s hair
At this point, she had came to the conclusion that the whole act is just how men of nobilities in this kingdom say "hello" to girl, something with no weight in it and not to be taken seriously. ^^;;

Yea, that’s the biggest issue. She realized how odd her child was and instead of talking to her, she got a replacement and decided to not confront her own issues about it. If the mother had talked to her child about why she isn’t smiling genuinely, but Serena decided to lie or deflect, then that’s on Serena and we as the audience could feel a little more sympathy for the Mother.

on the 2nd part of the chapter:
This whole confrontation between these three kids feels like something that probably would’ve happened if there wasn’t a timeskip. It’s a big ask from the author to have us believe that absolutely no changes occurred to their dynamic and no progress was made in that time because both leads are not the type of passive characters to just let things stew for 4? years. This feels like a clumsy way to get them aged up.

EXACTLY. I can understand being shocked at how coldly Serena attacked that dog, but she did so in self defense. Her mother fears her like she's some kind of monster that might kill her with no reason and no warning, but her acting "so adultlike it's scary" shows that she's always been intelligent and reasonable enough to make an effort to fit into society. Even if she's never shown a "real smile," it's not like she's using fake smiles or fake tears like her sister does in order to manipulate people beyond common etiquette and getting along with her family even when they're being difficult, and it's not like she's had any reason to genuinely smile at her mother when her mother has always neglected her.

Her mother just seems so... naive for a noblewoman. Like it's been how many years since that incident with the dog with no follow up incidents and she still thinks Serena is dangerous? And by birthright Serena will inherit their estate, so if she really thinks she's so dangerous she should have spoken to her husband about it seriously and resolved the issue long ago. She could have tried to get Serena out of the household, faking her death or just disowning her and giving her the life of a commoner, or she should have tried to talk things out with some kind of mediator or doctor on hand to try to get Serena to open up. She should have done something, even just thought about it a little bit, but instead all she's done is run away from the issue and indulged in spoiling her adoptive daughter.

I'd have more sympathy for this woman if she wasn't a pampered noblewoman who should be responsible for the lives of all who depend on her estate and who should also be responsible for Serena's wellbeing just as her mother, but she's so focused on what feels right that she even neglects to raise her adoptive daughter who she loves so much more to know basic knowledge necessary for nobility not to get themselves executed like she's doing right now just because Serena pointed it out, and Serena bad.
