After dying from betrayal, even though he knew something was suspicious about this guy, he wasn't on guard at all. He exhausted himself and made no arrangements for betrayal.
Not promising, especially after he left that wannabe sponsor alive after (a) he tried to kill him (b) he took Kanna hostage (c) knowing he was working for his enemy and (d) knowing he is far from being able to confront his enemy. Like, news flash, they will probably talk to each other.
