Isn't that just something that appeared out of nowhere when some Japanese guy decided to have orcs rape elves, and big breasts went well together with that? I strongly believe before that elves used to be slim, high agility archers. Elves were hardly ever any sex symbols, even though they were described as beautiful, elegant, and of noble bearing. In fact I reckon in Western fantasy literature they definitely aren't big breasted in any significant numbers.

@monkey123 @Kaarme I'd say as far as manga go, Elves usually have whichever size breast the artist prefers. Elves are basically the representations of beauty in a fantasy setting, so the person working on the series has their own tastes leak out. This time might have just been for the boob faction joke though.

@monkey123 Yeah, mostly. For a more accurate depiction of the average Japanese woman, you'd probably want to split the difference between most shoujo/josei (a lot of these, got a bunch of 2x4s running around 'cause who cares about tits when we can have giraffe necks and facehugger hands on dudes) stuff and some of the shounen/seinen content with more realistic versions of things (I can only think of seinen ones that'd work offhand but I'm sure a shounen series or two like that are out there).

@monkey123 Yeah, it was just an exaggerated example. Not that you'd find plenty of rape anyway in mainstream shounen/seinen. However, big breasted elves certainly are easy to find. It's kind of strange considering in most Japanese works elves are still a species with a considerably long lifespan, so to make them look like sex machines that could feed six babies with milk to spare kind of conflicts with that. I guess @Glomoro is correct: Elves are whatever the artist prefers, and I suppose for the Japanese it would be big breasts since in RL those are fewer over there than in the West. It's exotic. In the West a big chest is nothing extraordinary, so making elves like that would grant them nothing extra. Not to mention in the West elves in fiction originate from a considerably older time when lewdness in fiction wasn't as overt as these days.
