I don't think I wrote that they should be unilaterally forgiven. Just that the efforts being made should be recognized as such.Sure, people are allowed to try and improve, and they should. However, as the saying goes “that is that, and this is this”.
These people are free to learn from their mistakes but they have no right to expect to be part of the MCs life just because they’ve turned a corner.
Shitty people being able to evolve into less shitty people does not make them deserving of being unilaterally forgiven. If a rapist reforms what do their victims get from that change? Absolutely nothing. The damage they’ve inflicted hasn’t changed at all.
You may say that it’s an extreme example but remember objectively what his life has been like:
The MC had no place of safety or warmth. Not at school, not at home. No friends, a negligent and openly hostile family, no teachers or authority figures he could trust let alone rely on. The people he cared about the most were the same people who betrayed him and hurt him the most.
Whenever they found a pocket of solace, be it a person or a club, it was cruelly taken away. This happened over and over.
He was assaulted, vilified, abused, and told repeatedly that he should disappear or kill himself. His life was so bad that he actually attempted to follow through with his tormentors wishes. He had decided that it was better to not continue living if it was going to stay like this.
Also remember he was not a mature adult dealing with all of this. He was just a young child when this began and it’s lasted for years.
But you're not wrong. Ultimately, this title isn't meant to be realistic.
You state that the MC wasn't a mature adult dealing with all of this, but his mindset, thought process, and actions in the flashback in elementary school clearly show that he's operating at a level above the adults as they're presented within the narrative.
Every female character in the series, including MC's sister and mother, seem intent on using their body to appease him and show their forgiveness first, and only after the fact seek to ensure his comfort and safety.
He's randomly making in-roads with extremely powerful and/or influential figures within various systems of power that are uniquely placed to bring the hammer of god down on those "authority figures" who seek to hurt him for whatever reason or the other. And it's not like they're family members of his; just people he "happened to" form some bond or connection with, and then conveniently benefited from such.
None of this is meant to be taken seriously. It's schadenfreude, as someone else here helpfully stated, and so your "that is that, and this is this" is true to a great degree:
These are caricatures of characters, and applying anything relating to nuance or realism to any aspect of this title is a fool's errand that I should probably stop attempting, at some point, because it invariably results in pointless "debates" like the one happening here.
So I'll just leave it at that.
