It wasn't just "petty bullshit their kid said". She asked her father to run a smear campaign, which he willingly obliged. That kid's parents tried to ruin Katarina and her family for the sake of their daughter.

The prince also didn't complain once about people not liking him. You're just making stuff up now or have really misread something. He actually complained that people kept projecting the image of a perfect prince onto him and wanted more people to see the real him.

Honestly, his worst qualities only show up because Katarina is so unaware and, if I'm being honest, stupid. He's her fiancée and everyone around him is splitting them up—she isn't aware of it—and he just grins and bears it because he doesn't want to hurt her friendships.
