Musings of the day: Haseo being a simp literally saved lives this time. Good for him.
Well, this is the end of volume 5, but we're going to keep going for a while longer. This time around we have a character that is originally presented as gender-ambiguous, which is cool, but also a pain to translate. Most of these dialogues don't even reference any gender in Japanese, but they sound really awkward if you try to do the same in English. I'm sorry if I made it more confusing than what it already was.
And somehow I managed to put all of that information in just three translation notes pages. I'm sorry for being such a yapper. There's still the big elephant in the room of who's the Chinese Emperor mentioned in the first page, but since they talk about him again in the next chapter, we'll leave it for next week.
This took longer than I had anticipated and on top of that, I have a lot of exams this month, but I'll try to publish these three chapters weekly. Btw in the month I've been gone, I've started reading the Ise Monogatari (yeah, finally, I know), and it turns out that the flashback in chapter 7 references one of the stories there. I feel so stupid for not knowing. There's also a lot of context for Narihira's political situation that it's really cool to know. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that you should read if you haven't already.
I'll shut up now. See you next week.
P.S.: I think simply leaving the song link here is probably better than making you look it up:
P.S. 2: ngl the dialogue at the beginning of page 25 confuses me a little because the patterns on their clothes are completely different, so I'm guessing maybe the fabric is similar (?). Either that, or I completely misunderstood what they're saying.
