Does Japan actually allow minors to sign contracts without their parent's consent? I sometimes get confused by ridiculous story conceits that might just be legal or cultural differences

(the "parents ran away and left children with debt" trope is similar for me and peeves me to no end)

@Makinbaconpancakes I'm pretty sure both are illegal. Also, there is a thing in Japan about abandoned houses in the countryside. Lots of them are from when a elderly person dies and the children/grandchildren don't want to pay the inheritance taxes or take on a financial burden and can legally sign away rights of inheritance in order to default an any outstanding inherited debt too. And no a person under 20 can't sign legal documents with out a guardian. Also in Japan contracts aren't official with just a signature you need a family stamp(“Hanko” and “Inkan”)

@Raygunsama I thought #1 rule was: Never start a land war in Asia 😆
followed by: Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

Thanks @Mojo for the confirmation and context, glad Japanese law isn't like some of the setups. It's easy to say OK, it's alternate reality for sci fi or fantasy elements, but when it's differences in what is socially or legally acceptable there's often that nagging uncertainty as an American reading online fan scanlations.

@Makinbaconpancakes BTW I was not aware before, but they recently revised the law in Japan, starting in 2022 the legal age of adulthood is 18. Before then you couldn't even get married without parental consent until your 20. This also changes the age of voters and legal drinking.
