Really damn good developed magic system

Im interested in a fantasyish or sci-fi story where the mc is invested into making his own magic or studying it atleast.
Nothing cheap like "hehe i go squiggly line and make it 1000 times stronger hehe" because that logic is shit and if it was that simple people would have done it forever ago.

I haven't read it past 20-30 chapter yet and it's been long time since the last time I read it.
If I recall, the MC is not actually overpowered, instead cleverly use basic magic.
