I think it's just politics, they want to use him as figurehead of their faction. If he fails or dies, they will just find someone else.

The dangers of having his AI support influence the people around him. In their mind he's this oh so great guy that can do everything. Unless they have specific reason to doubt him, I doubt anyone would notice it. Sheryl noticed it because she was practising her social skills with Katsuya.

With a cold-war between factions, Katsuya as the head AND taking down the snake would rocket them all the way to the top of the food chain.
Don't be quick to forget that his AI companion, all though less powerful, has major influence in how people see him. In Drancam he's the "best boy" so to speak, so of course they'd want the Hero to lead a group.
He's been leading groups for a while now, and the fact that he's not dead is a good enough reason to keep him around, especially with the AI polishing his ass everywhere he goes.

As others have pointed out, he isn't selected because he is the best choice, but because he is the best choice in their faction. Also because he wouldn't follow orders anyway, so he may as well give them...

Mangadex needs to do something about these kinds of groups but they never will since these groups will just threaten to delete every translation they ever did off the website. Now we're stuck here with patreon scammers and website peddlers making series look like they've been abandoned.
I don't understand how Mangadex plans on becoming the "Crunchyroll of manga" when translation groups seeking funds rules this website. Maybe if Viz buys them out or something. Regardless it's pretty bleak.

The way Akira put the guy in his place was so satisfying. And the harem protag seems to be scheduled for the gallows at this rate.
It's not just for plot. Drancam wants to set him up as some hero type bullshit in the eyes of the public. Makes them look better by having him on their side
