I honestly was expecting her to strip naked & do a night visit with the intention of crossing the line. Man my brain is set to degeneracy given what we've seen in the past chapters.
Also to note & the last time I'll bring it up Nikumaru sensei's oneshot that got translated by the same translator, I got curious to see how low the rating for it will go. This oneshot was the worst rated manga of 2024 (you could argue there could be other manga that don't have a translation if you want to be fair but let's not get into specifics) on Mangadex with a rating of 3.48. Not only that, it is also the 6th worst rated manga of all time beating the infamous Gal☆Cleaning! (at 8th place & DON'T READ IT). Just thought I'd share it & say thank you guys for giving me a great laugh.

Why I have that lingering negative feeling, that Yako was introduced and had her mini-ark of the summer work stuff to be that "contrasting object" kinda thing - to show us how far from sane/normal all other characters are.

Was she, though? That's definitely the main effect she had for me, but was it the intention? I wouldn't be surprised if the truth was literally "Well I doodled a girl with long hair and a bubbly personality and really fell in love with the character. So I decided to squeak her into the story because she looked enough like a random mob I put next to Umimi one time. She seems like she'd be a fun character." I always kinda figured that Yako's narrative purpose was to solve Umimi Progress Roadblock #2: Procrastination/Denial.

For whatever reason, Umimi was written from the jump with at least two major impediments to romantic progress:

1. Not realizing her feelings for Riku were those of romantic love (Canonically resolved(?) by watching him kiss Shizuku)
2. Procrastination, denial, and a general lack of sense of urgency about making progress with Riku, where she repeatedly recognizes the possibility of him getting a girlfriend, but deliberately thinks to herself "I'll worry about that later" (Resolved(?)* by Yako's directness in the first three chapters of her even being a character, culminating in Umimi's forceful confession (ch.31-33)) *NB: Confession's urgency is gently walked back to "Status Quo" in a flashback on pp.5-6 next chapter, which is also the chapter where Yako's default personality changes into "exactly like the others, but ditzy" when she apparently decides that being a functional human that communicates isn't "playing fair and square" (p.17), thus solving the problem of Yako being way too OP for this harem

For me, Yako's contrast by being sane and effective at pursuing Riku was too effective: It was one more thing to pull me out of the story and heave a "This is all... real dumb, isn't it" sigh. That's bad enough in a romcom, but a dramatic mystery story? Poison. And I don't think there's any attempt to keep Yako in that Contrast role past her first few chapters. Her last appearance is ch.49 I believe, and not only is she actively working for Umimi's hopeless cause rather than her own, but she's making dumb excuses and runs away screaming and blushing when Riku calls her kind. Yako's just another idiot treading water at this point.

Okay, on another note, somebody help: Do you reckon the implication of pages 14 and 15 is that the kiss woke him, or that he was awake the whole time and the sleep talking and rolling over was fake? He IS kinda blushing the same amounts both before and after the kiss.
