I did not see that one coming. It's looking like it's not going to be a love triangle per se, but after the last few chapters, I'm not completely sold on this new character. She's cool and all, but I hope she's not used to milk the plot or something like other comments have suggested.

What will the author use to prolong the story next? Maybe after Ayumu beats the shithead and before he beats the President a handsome male transfer student will come along and beat everyone so Ayumu will feel compelled to beat him first before he beats the President before he confesses? The President is clearly going to graduate and move on before she gets a confession from Ayumu.

@lolipedofin Well, in this chapter she's disrespectful and rude with that Yaotome-senpai bit, refusing to call her the club president, then changing from -senpai to -san after beating Ayumu. Even to non-Japanese people she's horribly rude at best, and I would guess that Japanese people would find her attitude appalling. She needs someone to knock that chip off her shoulder, so I'm hoping Urushi absolutely slaughters her at shogi next chapter.

And she's not unique, assholes are a dime a dozen in the real world and in manga. That's the reason the phrase "knock the/that chip off his/her shoulder" exists. Frankly I don't read cute, fluffy series to have to deal with asshole characters, and clearly I'm not alone in that. Those characters have their place, but this really isn't the type of series where they fit in well.

It's as if the editor told the author that, after some 70 chapters, it was time to add some real drama into the plot to stir things up and introduce a nasty rival character. And here we are.

@Doctor_Malsyn It makes sense. Shogi is a game where you gradually get better at - the MC hasn't been doing it for all that long so he has a long way to go when compared to people who've been doing it for years. It's not like he was interested in Shogi beforehand - he just joined the club because it was love at first sight.

@Petnavis While yea, it is a something that requires years of practice and studying to really improve it doesn't make the impact any less then it was.

"Hello I am New Girl. Ahah, I see you've been playing Shogi for 70 chapters in hopes of defeating and confessing to your senpai? Behold, I am already better then you are at this game."

It does give him a benchmark that's likely closer to his level to measure against and improve, but man does it sting to see my boy has a lot farther to go then we hoped.
