I can't help but wonder if she's really in the past. Maybe this is just a kind of what-if time bubble she's experiencing before returning, without really leaving any marks in the history. It ought to still serve some purpose for her personally, though, because this isn't the kind of story that would have totally useless arcs.

Huh interesting, so will this journey to the past causes a split in timeline or will it rewrite the current one :pepehmm:
Nah, judging how her memory from that time is fuzzy, my guess is on "That's acctually the way it happened in first place." My guess is on their own party destroying the artifact themselves, on instruction of future Frieren without telling past Frieren about it. And maybe even past Frieren deleting her own memories after arriving back from the future. Or it's being done by the stone automatically or by a timedelayed spell by future Frieren on herself to hit past Frieren.
The acctual fun question is, what happened in the timeperiod she can't remember?

Why is that so accurate now that I think about it

Frieren casually showing that future her is stonks. Past her was the more common mid-level adventuring party, while future her is max level. The only thing that stayed the same was her mindset which left her believing she's not that different from the past.

The most fantasy-like aspect of the manga are these amazing friends that Frieren has... capable of understanding her without words and fully trusting her.
You can find that easily, that's not fantasy.

Just join the military. Get deployed. Make some friends, fighting back to back, in dangerous situations. Read each other's minds, know how to best cover each other. Watch them die in your arms. Hand over their last letters to their family. Relive their deaths night after night, or whenever a sound occurs that reminds you of their deaths.
