In reality he might be a hermit that has largely rejected the whole civilization thing, so his behavior would reflect more the kind of behavior foxes would have in their natural state, just mixed in with the extra techniques and possibilities Japanese mythological foxes possess.

Kogane and her family keep stressing to Goro that the foxes are animals that can look human. To an animal, fighting and defeating a rival over a potential mate is a part of life. This arc kinda feels like the animal part of Kogane's life intruding into the closeness between Kogane and Goro.
