So the guy married some sort of house-like being, lives in it, and his first son is human, but his other one is of unstable form and needs some sort of “mother” role to stabilize (which would slowly endanger the women in that role). The house itself eats the “mothers” that were let go (ironically being let go was supposed to prevent them from being harmed).

(I assumed most things the man said to our duo are lies and what he said to his son to be true, considering his body language)

There is also no smell because the house didn’t try or think to do anything to our duo until they have left.

That’s just feckin’ weird….. (but is on par for this series).

From what I can tell, it didn't stink while they were there, because at that point it was just all the dad being a weird creep which while scary is entirely human so Yume's nose doesn't pick up on it.

Additionally with the way the older brother talks he's been under the belief all the "mothers" they've hired have just been sent home after doing their job but it looks like the real mother, the house spirit thing, eats the "mothers" once they leave because she doesn't want her son to know.

So any danger while they were on the job was purely human creepiness, and the real danger is in leaving because that's when the supernatural creature, the mom, attempts to eat them. having sat in waiting and thus not triggering Yume's vibe check for the entire duration of the job itself.

This would also easily explain why this normal (well) family can afford grey job level tutors. You can just take the money back and that's that.

The Mother woke up and wanted a snack. Until she emerged the two weren't in any danger because the Father and Son's only intent was to make them "Mothers" and send them home. Unbeknownst to them the Monster House doesn't let the hired escape. She consumes them and uses their essence to bring Ryouji back.

The Dad assumed they were failures and not suited for the ritual so he let them go before they were properly cooked. The only reason he went back after the two was because his wife told him to get them back but obviously they weren't going back after smelling black.

Usually the hired hands have maternal instincts already ingrained in them which is why the Father and Son keep them around.

This is how I saw the story as well. Our MCs got lucky that the "mom" didn't wake up before they got released.
