I think this series parallels the way we strategically deal with negative emotions in real life. We find an incompatible emotion and move into its frame of appraisal. For fear (frame: X is an unknown threat), the counterparts are 1) being horny (frame: X is a mate) 2) laughter/ridicule (frame: X is funny). Those counterparts tend to be very productive for storytelling. Maybe part of Dungeon Meshi's hidden appeal was that it provides another response to monsters: 3) being hungry (frame: X would be delicious with the right seasonings).
