He's saying it as a props to her as well, since she too put in a lot of work for this mascot competition.

@Lucky @Simpleton
The line in Japanese is: オレが頑張ってないみたいで嫌だ
The literal meaning is something like, "It sounds like I don't try [haven't been trying] my hardest and I hate that."

So he is talking about himself directly.

@smashman42 This translation is definitely better IMO, but absolutely not worth waiting a month for, especially when they only start translating when they get “sniped.” There’s really not that much of a different between the two for it to be worth waiting a month IMHO. I’d much rather have translations that aren’t as good, but are at least consistent.

@Ihcky This one was very easy! Hopefully the redraws in the next chapter don't take too long.

Here again to remind you all that Facepalm are serial liars. Don't believe anything they say.

Thank you.

Wow, the meaning in 2 last pages it rather obvious, same with how Anjous speach back in "date" chapter was, huh...
Thanks for translation, also probably not alot noticed, but that redrawing with bunny ears must've been a bitch to do. Also one person behind cleaning/translating/typesetting, I can get behind this... oh, dear I can...

Not gonna touch on whatever drama is up with facepalm, but I will say the difference in translation doesn't seem super far apart, but the spots where they are show a pretty big difference. Folks are talking about Inuyama here, which fair, but I think the art teacher is probably the biggest difference. It's a little cheaty, since we got a little bit more context from the next chapter to work with but peep the differences on page 10 and 11

Face Palm 10/11
Teacher 10 Panel 1: Hm...Maybe You Should Give Up this time.
Teacher 10 Panel 3: I told you, Remember? Show me something that screams, "This is it"
Teacher 11 Panel 2: But this isn't embarrassing, is it?

Anon 10/11
Teacher 10 Panel 1: This time I think it's better if you give up.
Teacher 10 Panel 3: I told you right? If this is all you have to show me.
Teacher 11 Panel 2: This. Isn't it embarrassing?

Like they SAY basically the same thing, save the panel 3 in Anon, which maybe they forgot to reference back to the this is it bit? I'm to understand that japanese does that with things being kinda implication heavy so they wouldn't necessarily refer back to the precise phrase so it's implied to be there/stated, but otherwise they're pretty close in meaning.

But the difference a few words makes is fascinating here, because anon's has the teacher come off almost like "wow you really thought this was a good idea? Wow, fucking wow." vs facepalms which has the teach come off as "Is this really your best? Are you sure that this is it?"

And if it could come off as both in japanese (what with the call back...lack of subject was it I think? Sorry wandering, but assuming that recollection is accurate) no wonder Toyoda basically crumples. She was already looking at things negatively, so she'd be more likely to come to the wow fucking wow conclusion than the this is it conclusion. She reads it as you're bad and you should feel bad instead of this design in particular isn't quite doing it think back to what you really like and try again.

I mean heck, going back to the Panel 1 Line, even though it's also saying give up, in context facepalms reads more as "nah this design doesn't quite cut it" vs anons"just stop. It's over, stop, never darken my view again." especially taken with their respective second lines.

It's really neat being able to see two translations side by side like this, what with them both being pretty solid all told.

@Raguel I can see why Anon would make that mistake though, since the difference is mostly about tone.
Especially then since "Hazukashikunai?" is such a common stock phrase for someone mocking someone, and this doesn't read all that far off.

@matthewyu123 While I don't care for the timing of these releases, I'd say the scans are worth them being around. This whole thing pretty much illustrates why the whole honour code thing the community has is bullshit.
It's not like every group working on the same thing would be working on another series. It takes some interest to bother with stuff like this. Just reading it for yourself can be exhausting when you aren't a very fluent reader.

Seriously, just leave it up to /a/nons already, stop embarrassing yourselves.

@ringo_juusu Unless you don’t know anything about the situation, it’s obvious how they are embarrassing themselves IMO. Sniped the original translators that gave us consistent releases, talked shit, translated it for a little while and made promises, couldn’t keep promises, and now only come out to translate when they get sniped themselves.

Wow, the comments on Facepalm releases is a great way to find block-worthy people. Kudos, Facepalm.😉
