I thought maybe something could have been lost in translation here, since there are a number of Japanese words that could be translated as "monster," but the one used in this chapter was "mamono" (魔物), which is defined as "demon; devil; evil spirit; monster; goblin; apparition." I'm not fluent, and as such I rely more on dictionary definitions than nuance, but it certainly doesn't strike me as a label one would apply to anyone they hope to get along with.

Note that 魔 is also the kanji they use in word "magic", which is usually neutral in works of fantasy. So words like "mamono" and "majin" do not have to be pejorative either.

it's why I used to use "-folk" when translating back then.

lots of authors like this manga's during the boon of isekais back in 2013-2016 would often lump all non-human races with 魔物 instead of using 亜人間 to differentiate.
