It consumes MP to take opponent's HP. If your MP isn't high enough, you go splat; that's why the item that replicates it is so often referred to as, "the orb of self destruction". His MP is much higher now with several mana-based classes supporting him, as well as much higher levels, as well as the fact he was using Durandal actively to counteract the MP drain immediately afterwards.

To be fair, that was before it had really sunk in that this was another world, not a video game. A better example of his ruthlessness is when he realized he wasn't earning money in the dungeon fast enough to buy Roxanne before the deadline, so he snuck into the home of some sleeping criminals and killed them in their sleep just in case they had bounties he could cash in. (Not all of them did.)

Speaking of, I wonder how much these schmucks were worth.
