Well, I can understand where she's coming from. As a single mother, she probably had to give up on her own dreams to raise Naruto, and she had to make a lot of pragmatic choices over the years for financial reasons. And maybe it's because of my own experience seeing friends choose college majors based on their hobbies, only to find themselves incapable of getting a sustainable career in a related field, but yeah, there can't be a lot of job opportunities for people studying dinosaurs. I kinda feel like the manga artist might be getting a little autobiographical here, with their own family discouraging them from trying to make a living as a manga artist. And then there's the fact that one of the characters actually is an aspiring manga artist, but it's a hobby she pursues on the side, whereas she's a doctor in her day job. So yeah, Naruto's mother isn't great, but the story is being written by someone who took a chance pursuing a dream, so I can see why someone who's trying to be the voice of reason comes off more like a villain.

Backstory chapters are important to flesh out characters, plus, it will only make their comeback more satisfying.

Yeah, but the shit system and shittier situation should never be a reason or an excuse to shit on your own kid his whole life.
There are parents out there in the same shitty situation, but they do double shifts, do fucking backflips and shit blood just to be able to give their kids a chance in having a better life than theirs.

What you say is true, but what we have here is an example (even if "fake") of a MOTHER that belittles HER SON since he was a kid, calling him stupid and saying that everything he did and does is a waste of time. And from here, you can go back to the first line.

A single parent raising a child is always praiseworthy. However it looks like she also takes any chance to tear apart his dream and ambitions, all the while insulting him. For example, take a look at her expression when she was telling him that she's been having trouble moving lately, and see how it instantly changed when he said that he was saving money for Grad School. Rather than try to hear for the first time, she immediately went to insult and tear him down.

Again, it's praiseworthy to raise a child singlehandedly, but not to tear them down or keep them fettered because it's more convenient for you, especially when they had already left the nest.

There's no excuse for this. Single-handed or not, she clearly didn't do any RAISING of any sort, just beat him down to keep him as miserable as she is. Providing food and shelter is the bare minimum.

If you're such a failure of an adult that you can't be decent to children, let alone spare a SINGLE kind word for your own, at least have the courtesy to KEEP YOUR POISON TO YOURSELF, YOU RANK BITCH!

Nobody said or implied it's easy to singlehandedly raise a child.

The issue is how every opportunity she had to break him down she did. Outright telling him he's not smart enough for things, trashing on his dreams and ambitions. Any time he made progress being told it isn't like he could do any better since he didn't go to a good college. Tossing every mistake or failure in his face. Breaking down any and all progress he had made, all the while expecting someone to bail you out and carry you.

Look, you can be burned out and depressed. That's fine, it happens and it sucks. It's an unimaginable weight to carry. But let's not pretend that she's innocent and that she has a free pass to act like she because of it and, evidently by this chapter, continues to.

As someone who grew up in a household similar to that, this is one of the most moronic things I've read. Being a single parent in no way excuses berating your child constantly, belittling them for simply having dreams, and refusing to acknowledge any achievements they actually make - that is not a parent, that's a fucking piece of shit. And trust me, the effects from being treated that way by your own family do not just go away. By acting like that, you're just fucking up your child mentally for life.
